About the Project

The project investigates the role ethnic and cultural organisations play in British and German expatriate social networking in Asia to shed light on why ethnicity remains a key chain in their migratory experience, life and identity, as well as their interactions with the host society in Asia.

The research project is led by Dr Tanja Bueltmann, Senior Lecturer in History at Northumbria University. Tanja's research interests are in diaspora and wider British World history, especially the social history of British and German immigrant communities and their ethnic associational culture.

This section of the website will grow as the project develops, showcasing research findings and interesting materials. As the research has only just commenced the section currently centres on short background essays on British and German migration to Asia and ethnic associations.
